Weekend Listening – Chromatics – ‘Kill For Love’

I don’t know about all of you, but I could really use a good long break this weekend. All this heat and work stress is killing, I’m in desperate need of some summer listening. Therefore, for this week’s Weekend Listening, I have decided to feature one of the year’s best records. The Chromatics – ‘Kill For Love’ is truly a unique album. Somehow these dance/disco aficionados are able to sound both retro AND futuristic. This ear-opening combination has granted the group some well deserved fame since their excellent work sound tracking the Ryan Gosling movie ‘Drive’ last year. ‘Kill For Love’ is one of the most impressive grower albums I’ve ever come across. The first time through you’re sure to be hooked by the pop gems, ‘Kill for Love’, ‘Candy’, and ‘These Streets…’, but additional listens will open up new impressions delivered through the more extended tracks, ‘The River’ and ‘Birds of Paradise’ among several others. In this light the album both entertains and intrigues, something to be accomplished in the dance/disco genre. If nothing else check out the album opening ‘Into the Black’, quite possibly the best Neil Young cover I’ve ever heard.

The album is out on Italians Do It Better, though no vinyl version is available as of yet. Below is a great stream of the entire LP, so have at it.

Don’t forget to join me in checking these guy’s live set out tomorrow night at the GvB Fest. Cheap tickets are still out there…
